The Medial Demonstratives {he}{zayin}{lamed}{he}, {vav}{zayin}{lamed}{he}, and {zayin}{lamed}{he}

W. Randall Garr

Department of Religious Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA 93106-3130, USA

{he}{zayin}{lamed}{he}, {vav}{zayin}{lamed}{he}, and {zayin}{lamed}{he} are synonymous neither with the proximal demonstratives ({he}{zayin} and {tav}{alef}{zayin}) nor the distal demonstratives ({alef}{vav}{he} and {alef}{yod}{he}). Rather {he}{zayin}{lamed}{he}, {vav}{zayin}{lamed}{he}, and {zayin}{lamed}{he} are medial demonstratives that signal a concrete entity within visual range.

Key Words: Hebrew demonstratives • medial demonstratives
